I want to let you in on a secret that I haven't really shared before. When I was younger, I'm talking in my 20's I hated how I looked.
I worked in a setting where everyone was female in their 20's or early 30's. The talk every day was about being over-weight even though the majority of us were all really a healthy weight.
Everybody constantly tried all the latest and craziest diets. I remember we all lived on chicken, plastic cheese and cardboard type biscuits for lunch. I had the sense to have breakfast which consisted of a fairly healthy cereal and then an evening meal of meat and vegies. Many of the others skipped breakfast and ate more chicken, cheese and dry biscuits for dinner washed down with wine.
Each week we all weighed ourselves and then became stressed when the scales didn't show any progress. I remember standing in front of the mirror and really hating what I saw even though I was a healthy weight.
I remember once I must have put on a little bit of weight and an over-weight relative made a comment "gee you are getting a big backside." This just mortified me!
I regularly went to the gym but didn't work really hard as I was embarrassed by how I looked and felt really intimidated by everyone around me so did the same thing over and over as I was too shy and embarrassed to ask for a new program, so I didn't get a lot from my gym visits.
I became pregnant and the realization suddenly hit me that I had to eat healthy and look after myself as I had a little growing body inside of me. This was my savior. I started to eat a more balanced diet. I kept going to the gym and did summon up the courage to ask for help as I knew that I had to keep my baby safe. I sailed through my pregnancy and had a beautiful baby girl.
I was now a full time mum and because I was eating healthy and I no longer had contact with my old work buddies my attitudes gradually changed about how I looked. In honesty I think I was too busy to worry. In no time at all I had another 2 babies, so had 3 amazing children under 5. To keep fit, (don't laugh) I purchased a Jane Fonda exercise tape and worked out each day, plus I walked whenever I could.
This is when I became hooked on the feeling of what it was like to be fit and strong and it was the real start to living a life that embraced healthy eating, exercise and very importantly a healthy body image. So that's my story.
Since these days I have continued to exercise and embrace a healthy lifestyle. Then 8 years ago I decided to take the plunge and become a trainer so that I could help other ladies to be fitter, healthier and happier. So that's my story.
Our mission at Libby's Fitness For Life is to help ladies to become empowered to be the very best versions of themselves and to be confident, fit, healthy and happy.
We do not focus on diets; we focus on healthy eating and changing your mindset. We believe exercise should be fun rather than something that feels like punishment. We also want to help ladies to be able to foster a healthy self-image so that they can look in the mirror and be proud of what they see.
